IGNOU becomes the First Open University in India to Launch M.Sc. (Climate Change) Empowering Future Climate Leaders

 IGNOU has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Open University in India to launch the Master of Science (M.Sc.) Climate Change programme It is a significant step towards addressing one of the most pressing global challenges of our time.

Climate change is increasingly impacting ecosystems, economies, and human well-being across the world. Recognizing the urgent need for trained professionals capable of developing sustainable and resilient solutions, IGNOU has designed this innovative multidisciplinary programme to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of climate science, climate risks, adaptation and mitigation strategies, environmental governance, and sustainable development.

The programme explores critical themes such as climate change and water resources, energy systems, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, waste management, circular economy, health, ecosystem restoration, environmental legislation, governance, and climate assessment tools. It equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to address real-world climate challenges and contribute to national and global sustainability goals.

The programme is coordinated by Dr. V. Venkatramanan and Prof. Shachi Shah, who bring extensive academic and research expertise in the fields of environment, sustainability, and climate change studies.

The eligibility to enrol in the programme is graduation in any discipline. The two year programme carries 80 credits and offers flexibility for learners. Students completing the first year successfully may also opt to receive a Post Graduate Diploma in Climate Change (PGDCCC).
